The round that lost the argument it was created to win. The United States spent the decade after 1944 shortening the .30-06 case while insisting the result was a genuinely new cartridge, and pushed it through NATO standardisation in 1954 against British work on a lighter .280. Within fifteen years every army that adopted it had concluded the recoil was too much for controllable automatic fire from a shoulder weapon, and the intermediate cartridge they had rejected won anyway.
What it left behind is a superb machine-gun and marksman round. The FN FAL, the M14, the MAG and the SVD’s Western equivalents all live on the fact that a 9.5 g bullet at 850 m/s still carries useful energy past 800 m.
Its dimensions here are the .308 Winchester’s, because no free standard publishes the military round. That substitution is stated on every affected figure rather than hidden; the two chambers accept each other’s ammunition but are not specified to the same pressure.
