    Detail

    Not a sniper rifle in the Western sense, and the distinction is the whole point of the design. Yevgeny Dragunov built a weapon for a marksman inside a rifle squad — one man per platoon, engaging out to about 800 m, moving and shooting at the same tempo as everyone around him. That is a different job from a two-man team in a hide with a bolt gun, and it produced a different rifle: self-loading, ten rounds, under four and a half kilograms, and accurate to roughly two minutes of angle rather than a fraction of one.

    Mechanically it looks like a Kalashnikov and is not one. The gas system is short-stroke, so the piston does not travel with the carrier; the bolt has three locking lugs instead of two; the receiver is a different pattern entirely and no parts interchange.

    The PSO-1 sight that came with it is as much a part of the weapon as the barrel — 4× magnification, an illuminated reticle, and a stadiametric rangefinder calibrated against a 1.7 m man.

    The cited article publishes no weight, no overall length and no barrel length, so this entry has none. That is a gap in the source rather than a property of the rifle, and it is why this page shows fewer figures than its neighbours.
