Founded at Wolfsburg in May 1937 to build one car for everybody, and it did: the Beetle outlasted the state that commissioned it.[1] The company’s second act was the harder one: replacing an air-cooled, rear-engined icon with a water-cooled, front-driven hatchback, and getting it right first time.
