Ferdinand Porsche’s brief, set by the Nazi government in 1934, was a car that could carry two adults and three children at speed while using no more than 7 litres of fuel per 100 km. That was Germany’s own answer to a car every family could own.[1] It stayed in production, essentially unchanged in concept, for sixty-five years and 21.5 million cars, the longest production run and the highest total of any car built on one platform.
