Detail
The SR-3 Vikhr is a compact Russian carbine built around the same 9×39mm subsonic action as the AS Val, with the integral suppressor removed. TsNIITochMash designed it in the early 1990s for the FSB and Russian special operations forces, who wanted the Val’s short-range terminal performance — particularly its SP-6 armour-piercing load, developed to defeat body armour and steel plate at short range — in a package small enough to carry concealed. Dropping the suppressor let the barrel and receiver shrink well below the Val’s length, and the SR-3 adds a top-folding stock and a redesigned dual-slider charging handle worked with the thumb and forefinger, in place of the Val’s AK-style handle, so the weapon can be readied one-handed while held close to the body.
It is gas-operated with a long-stroke piston and the same rotating bolt group as the Val, firing from a closed bolt in semi-automatic or fully automatic modes selected by a cross-bolt button inside the trigger guard. High production cost kept it out of general Russian military issue; it went instead to the presidential guard, FSB officers and Spetsnaz units from 1995. The improved SR-3M adopted the Val’s side-folding stock and controls, a quick-detachable suppressor of its own, and a 30-round magazine that remains compatible with the original SR-3’s 10- and 20-round magazines and with the Val and VSS Vintorez.
Most of this entry’s figures come from a TsNIITochMash exhibition placard legible in its own hero photograph, giving the manufacturer’s stated mass with an empty magazine, overall length folded and extended, and magazine capacities — a rare case of primary-source data for a Russian arm reachable without a paywall. Barrel length and cyclic rate have no citation on Wikipedia beyond an unreferenced infobox figure, corroborated only by a similar secondary compilation, and are recorded as estimated for that reason. No sourced barrel length carries a stated test velocity, so no muzzle velocity is recorded. No image search of Wikimedia Commons, Smithsonian Open Access or DVIDS turned up a photograph of the improved SR-3M or SR-3MP variants, both of which are described in this entry’s prose but not shown.
