The C7 is a Canadian-built derivative of the Colt AR-15/M16 rifle, produced under licence from 1982 by Diemaco of Kitchener, Ontario, and adopted by the Canadian Armed Forces in 1984 to replace the FN C1, Canada’s licence-built FN FAL. Rather than simply assembling the American design, Diemaco reworked its manufacturing and made a series of its own changes over the rifle’s production life — a heavier barrel profile than contemporary US M16s, revised sights, and other detail improvements — that were distinctive enough for the Canadian-built rifle to be treated as its own pattern rather than a licensed copy in name only.

Like the M16 it descends from, the C7 is gas-operated using Eugene Stoner’s direct-impingement system, in which propellant gas is tapped from the barrel and routed directly back into the bolt carrier rather than driving a separate piston, and it fires the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge from STANAG-pattern magazines shared across the wider AR-15 family. Diemaco also built a shorter-barrelled carbine version of the same action, the C8, sold and issued alongside the C7 rather than replacing it; this entry describes the full-length C7 rather than the C8, which this site records separately because carbine-length AR-pattern derivatives are treated as their own entries here.

Production and support of the C7 passed from Diemaco to Colt Canada when Colt bought and renamed the company in 2005, and Colt Canada continues to build and support the rifle family for the Canadian Armed Forces and export customers including the Netherlands and Denmark. The C7 has seen Canadian service in peacekeeping and combat deployments from the 1990s onward, including in Somalia, the Balkans and Afghanistan.
