Detail
The AK-9 is Izhmash’s answer to the AS Val and SR-3 Vikhr: a Kalashnikov-pattern carbine built around the same 9×39mm subsonic cartridge family, offering the SP-5 and SP-6 loads’ short-range, armour-piercing terminal performance with a quick-detachable suppressor rather than an integral one. Design work began in the early 2000s, reportedly at the Russian Interior Ministry’s request for a rifle combining Kalashnikov-pattern reliability and controls with the maneuverability of a dedicated suppressed carbine, and it is built on the AK-100 series’ action and furniture rather than a new design from the ground up. Alexei Dragunov, one of its designers, is quoted describing it as firing “virtually without a sound”, which is what the heavy subsonic 9×39mm bullet is for: it stays below the speed of sound, so a suppressor has no ballistic crack left to mask.
It entered limited service around 2007, gas-operated with a rotating bolt and select-fire, fed from a 20-round detachable magazine, and folds to a compact package with its suppressor removed. Despite that, it has seen far more limited issue than its established rivals the AS Val and SR-3M, staying a specialist tool for a few hundred units of Russian special and interior-ministry forces rather than a general-issue arm.
No manufacturer specification sheet for the AK-9 is published free online. Every figure in this entry comes from Wikipedia’s own infobox, which carries no inline citation for any of its dimensions, corroborated only by a Russian firearms-enthusiast site (armoury-online.ru) rather than by Izhmash directly — so mass, length, barrel length and magazine capacity are recorded as estimated rather than verified.
