Muzzle velocity

How Muzzle velocity is calculated

linear interpolation between the two nearest sourced barrel lengths

Inputs

  • v at 368.3 mm905.3 m/s2,970 fpsverifiedsourceTable 2-1, muzzle velocity for the M4: 2,970 fps.
  • v at 508 mm944.9 m/s3,100 fpsverifiedsourceTable 2-1, muzzle velocity for the M16A2: 3,100 fps. The M855 is the manual's service round for that rifle.

Assumptions

  • Velocity is assumed to vary linearly between the two measurements. Over a short span that is a reasonable reading of the data; it is not a law.

Loaded mass

How Loaded mass is calculated

m_loaded = m_empty + m_magazine + n · m_cartridge

Not calculated: m_magazine has no sourced figure yet. Nothing is substituted for a missing input.

Assumptions

  • One magazine, filled to the stated capacity. Spare magazines, optics, slings and lights are the owner’s, not the arm’s.

Free recoil

How Free recoil is calculated

E_recoil = ½ · m_firearm · v_recoil²

Inputs

  • m_firearm4.05 kg8.929 lbestimatedFrom the Wikipedia infobox, uncited there. Assault-rifle configuration; the carbine variant is lighter.
  • v_recoil0.9239 m/s3.031 fpsestimated

Assumptions

  • Propellant gas momentum is excluded: ARMAG does not record charge weights. This is therefore a lower bound on the real free recoil, consistent between entries but smaller than a figure that includes the gas term.
  • Free recoil: the arm is unrestrained. Stock design, muzzle devices, stance and shooter mass are not modelled, because none of them is a property of the arm.

Assumptions

  • Reported in the conventional lb/in² so it is directly comparable with published figures.

Sight error at 1 mm

How Sight error at 1 mm is calculated

θ = atan(misalignment / sight radius)

Not calculated: sight radius has no sourced figure yet. Nothing is substituted for a missing input.

Assumptions

  • Shows what a stated aiming error costs. The misalignment is the reader’s figure; the site does not claim how well anyone aims.

Scale

A to-scale outline against family siblings. The dimensions are sourced; the shape is a representative outline for the type, and says so.

  • FX-05 Xiuhcoatl1,000 mm39.37 inheight not recorded

Representative outline: the dimensions are sourced, the shape is not. Overall length, and barrel length where recorded, are drawn from this entry's own figures; the profile is a generic one for the firearm type and says nothing about this arm's actual contours. FX-05 Xiuhcoatl records no height, so its outline is drawn at the type's proportion. That height is part of the shape, not a measurement.

Detail

The FX-05 is Mexico’s domestically designed and built service rifle, developed by the army’s own Dirección General de Industria Militar after a planned licensed-production line for the Heckler & Koch G36 was cancelled in favour of a cheaper, wholly Mexican alternative. Development ran for sixteen months from 2005 under the army’s applied research centre, CIADTIM, and the rifle was presented publicly at the September 2006 military parade in the hands of Mexico’s Special Forces Airmobile Group, entering wider service in 2008.

The FX-05’s receiver was styled closely enough on the G36’s that Heckler & Koch raised a patent infringement claim in 2007; after inspecting the rifle’s internals, the German firm concluded there was no infringement and dropped the matter, because the mechanism inside differs substantially from the G36’s. Where the G36 uses a short-stroke gas system, the FX-05 uses a long-stroke gas piston mounted above the barrel driving a multi-lugged rotating bolt, an arrangement closer in principle to the AK pattern, and the external resemblance to the G36 is believed to have been deliberate, to ease commonality with the G36s already issued to many Mexican police forces. The rifle’s barrel uses polygonal rifling rather than conventional lands and grooves, one of relatively few production service rifles built that way, and its receiver is a carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer over a titanium frame.

It is chambered for 5.56×45mm NATO and offered in two length configurations covered here as variants: a full-length assault rifle and a shorter carbine, which differ only in barrel length, overall length and mass. The manufacturer has also built a short carbine with a shortened fore-end and a sharpshooter configuration with a fixed adjustable stock in place of the standard folding one; neither is documented with sourced figures independent of the standard configurations and neither is represented in this entry’s data. A submachine-gun-length derivative shown publicly in 2016 changes the type of arm entirely and is likewise not covered here. The FX-05 has armed the Mexican Armed Forces and the National Guard, and has also surfaced in the hands of organised-crime groups in Mexico’s drug conflict.

No maker specification sheet for the FX-05 is published; every dimension on this page comes from an uncited Wikipedia infobox figure and is recorded as estimated rather than verified. No source pairs a muzzle velocity with the barrel length it was measured over, so no velocity is recorded. No rifling twist rate is published, and no logo or wordmark for the manufacturer, a directorate of Mexico’s defence secretariat rather than a commercial brand, could be sourced.
