The K2 has armed the Republic of Korea’s conscript army since 1985, and it was built to answer a very specific supply problem. South Korea already built the M16A1 under licence from Colt, but the agreement covered too few rifles to equip a force counted in millions of reserves, and the fees made arming them that way expensive; an indigenous programme ran at the Agency for Defense Development from 1972 through seven prototype generations before the design was fielded. The result takes its fire control group and bolt carrier from the M16 and its gas system — a long-stroke piston above the barrel, rather than the M16’s direct impingement — from the Kalashnikov pattern, wrapped in a polymer-covered, side-folding-stock body externally closer to the AR-18. It feeds from the same STANAG magazine as the M16 it stood alongside, so the two rifles could draw from one logistics chain even where they shared nothing else mechanically.

Production has run continuously under a company that has changed its name six times without changing what it makes: Daewoo Precision Industries built the K2 from 1982, and the current manufacturer, SNT Motiv, is the same firm after a string of corporate reorganisations. The rifle has seen combat with South Korean forces in the Gulf War, the Iraq War and UN peacekeeping deployments, and it has been exported or licensed to a number of other militaries and police forces. From 2015 the rail-equipped K2C1 upgrade — recorded here as a variant, since it keeps the same action, operating system and 465 mm barrel — began replacing the original K2 in front-line service. A separate, shorter-barrelled K2C carbine with a retractable stock exists for roles where the full-length rifle is impractical; because it is classed as a carbine rather than a rifle, it is not modelled as a variant on this entry. Civilian semi-automatic-only export versions have also been sold under other names, including a variant chambered for 7.62×39mm rather than 5.56mm NATO.
