Founded in Mladá Boleslav in 1896 as Laurin & Klement, a bicycle maker that added motorcycles and then cars, and renamed Škoda after a 1925 merger with the Škoda Works engineering conglomerate.[1] The company was nationalised under Czechoslovakia’s communist government after 1945, and privatised again after 1989; Volkswagen took a stake in 1991 and full ownership by 2000, making Škoda the oldest marque in the Volkswagen Group.
