Detail

The toggle-link action is Volcanic’s, by way of the Henry rifle and the Winchester 1866, and by 1873 it was already the weak part of the design — a pair of links folding under the bolt, strong enough for pistol-pressure cartridges and nothing more. What the 1873 added was an iron frame instead of brass and a loading gate in its side, and what it added that actually mattered was a cartridge.

The .44-40 was Winchester’s first centre-fire round, and Colt chambered the Single Action Army for it within a year. One cartridge that fed both the rifle on the saddle and the revolver on the hip is a supply argument, and it is the reason this particular rifle became the one people picture.

Its limitation is the same toggle link. A Winchester 1873 cannot be chambered for a full-power rifle cartridge, which is why Browning’s 1886 and 1894 designs with vertical locking blocks replaced it.

Its three dimensions here are estimates, and the reason is worth stating plainly: the encyclopedia covers the Winchester rifles in one article and publishes one weight, one length and one barrel length for the whole series. This entry records them as the series figures they are rather than claiming them for the 1873.
