Detail

Uziel Gal’s contribution was not the telescoping bolt — the Czech CZ 23 had it first — but the consequences he drew from it. Wrapping the bolt around the rear of the barrel puts most of its mass in front of the breech face at the moment of firing, which lets the weapon be short without becoming uncontrollable. Putting the magazine in the pistol grip then makes it possible to reload in the dark by bringing two hands together, which is a soldier’s argument rather than an engineer’s.

Everything else is stamped steel and simplicity: a fixed firing pin, an open bolt, a grip safety that has to be squeezed before the bolt will move at all. Israeli production ran from 1954, and the design was licensed to FN in Belgium and made under other names elsewhere.

Its era ended when body armour and vehicle work made a pistol-calibre weapon look inadequate, and the compact assault rifle took its place in most of the roles it had held.
