6.8mm Remington SPC

Introduced 2004CIP standard

Also known as 6.8×43mm Remington SPC: the same cartridge under different names, all of which find this page.

Generated from the schema, like every specification table on this site, so a figure recorded on this entry cannot be missing from the table.

Detail

The US Special Operations Command worked with Remington Arms and the US Army Marksmanship Unit between 2002 and 2004 to develop a cartridge whose downrange ballistics held up better than 5.56×45mm NATO’s when fired from the short barrels common on carbines, while still fitting the magazine and bolt-face dimensions of the existing M16 rifle family and keeping recoil close to what a 5.56mm carbine already produced. The case is based on the older .30 Remington round, shortened and necked down to a .277 bullet so it would feed from a modified AR-15 magazine.

Its dimensions are governed by a C.I.P. standard adopted in 2006, two years after the cartridge’s introduction, and every dimensional figure here comes from that standard. The four load rows are factory ammunition figures the cited Wikipedia article attributes to SSA and Hornady product listings rather than to a document consulted directly here, so they are recorded as estimated pending an independent check of each manufacturer’s own page.

No ballistic-coefficient figure has been sourced for any of its four loads.
