Porsche’s first four-door saloon since the stillborn 989 concept of the 1980s, on sale since April 2009 as a five-door liftback rather than a conventional three-box sedan.[1] It sits above the Cayenne in Porsche’s range and shares little mechanically with it, built instead on dedicated Volkswagen Group platforms of its own.
This entry covers the first two generations: the 970 of 2009, whose liftback proportions drew criticism that Porsche visibly addressed with the next car, and the 971 of 2016, restyled with a clearer link to the 911’s tail-light treatment. The current third generation (972, 2024-present) is a gap in this catalogue.
