A document of 1526 records a payment to Bartolomeo Beretta of Gardone for arquebus barrels, and the family has been making gun parts in the same valley ever since — which makes this the oldest firearms manufacturer in the world and, by some distance, the oldest company on this site. Sixteen generations later it supplies the sporting-gun market, the Italian and American armies, and, through acquisitions from the late 1980s, Benelli, Franchi and Sako.
