FN 5.7×28mm
Introduced 1990FN HerstalCIP standard
Also known as 5.7×28mm — the same cartridge under different names, all of which find this page.
Dimensions and pressure
Generated from the schema, like every specification table on this site, so a figure recorded on this entry cannot be missing from the table.

SAAMI and C.I.P. measure pressure differently and their figures are not interchangeable, which is why the body is always named beside the figure.
Loads
Velocity is recorded per barrel length as published. A gun page interpolates between these points and never projects beyond them.

Detail
FN’s response to a 1989 NATO requirement for a personal defence weapon: a cartridge small enough that a soldier could carry two hundred rounds, fast enough to defeat body armour at a hundred metres, and mild enough to be fired from something the size of a submachine gun. The case is rebated — its rim is narrower than its body — which lets a bolt face sized for a smaller cartridge close on a fatter case.
Whether it succeeded depends on which claim is being tested. Against soft armour it does what was asked. Against the argument that a pistol-calibre carbine was already adequate, it has never fully won, and adoption outside special-purpose units has been thin.
The single load below carries a bullet mass and no velocity. The article states 716 for the SS190 without a unit that can be checked against a published energy, and this site records a velocity only when the figure and the barrel that produced it are both stated.
