The .476 Enfield, formally the .476 Enfield Mark III, was the British Army’s standard revolver cartridge from 1881 to 1891, chambered in the Enfield Mk II break-top revolver and named for the service that adopted it rather than for a manufacturer. It fires a large, heavy lead bullet at modest velocity from a short, straight-walled rimmed case, in keeping with the era’s preference for bullet mass and diameter over speed in a service handgun.
It was superseded from 1891 by the .455 Webley, later standardised as .455 Enfield, a cartridge close enough in bullet diameter that the two are sometimes confused; despite the similar name, the .476 Enfield’s slightly larger rim and base diameters mean the two rounds are not directly interchangeable in a revolver chambered for one or the other. Colonial military forces and Canada’s North-West Mounted Police carried the .476 Enfield alongside the British Army during its period of issue.
