The .300 Winchester Short Magnum is a rebated-rim, bottlenecked rifle cartridge Winchester introduced in 2001, built to deliver .300 Winchester Magnum-class performance from a case short enough to feed through a standard-length rifle action rather than the long magnum action the older cartridge needs. Its case is unbelted and its rim narrower than its body — the rebated-rim design shared across the whole WSM family — which lets a fat, short case headspace and feed through a bolt face sized for a standard .30-06-length cartridge.
At 53.34 mm case length against the .300 Winchester Magnum’s 66 mm, the WSM trades a longer powder column for a wider one, aiming to reach comparable velocities with less overall cartridge length and, Winchester argued, better powder-burn efficiency. Its 440 MPa C.I.P. pressure ceiling is high for a commercial hunting round, reflecting the shorter case’s smaller powder charge working at higher pressure to reach magnum velocities.
This entry carries the full C.I.P. dimensional standard and one factory load, Hornady’s Precision Hunter 200-grain ELD-X rated at 859.5 m/s from a stated 24-inch test barrel. No ballistic coefficient is published on that product page, so the cartridge computes a muzzle energy figure but no trajectory.
