The original Rio, launched in November 1999 with engines licensed from Mazda rather than developed in-house (Kia’s own engine programme came later).[1] It was, at launch, the least expensive mass-produced car sold in the United States, and was well liked for its price but not for its build quality or driving experience.
The 1.3-litre European engine’s power figure is a genuine ambiguous-unit case: Wikipedia states “75 hp” for it with no indication of whether that is imperial or metric horsepower, unlike the North American engines in the same infobox, whose figures the article’s own conversion templates confirm are imperial. The European figure is read the same way, by analogy, and marked as an estimate rather than a plain verified conversion; the alternative reading would only move the result by about 2%, but the source itself does not settle it. Kerb weight is only published as a range across the whole line-up (1,019-1,256 kg), so the lowest figure is recorded at generation level rather than assigned to a specific trim.
