Founded in Hiroshima in 1920 as a cork manufacturer, Mazda moved into three-wheeled trucks in the 1930s and passenger cars after the Second World War.[1] It is the company most associated with a single piece of engineering most other manufacturers walked away from: the Wankel rotary engine, which Mazda licensed from NSU in 1961 and kept refining and selling (in the Cosmo, the RX-7 and the RX-8) for four more decades after everyone else concluded it burned too much fuel and oil to be worth the smoothness.
