The second Mondeo, on sale from November 2000, shared its platform with the Jaguar X-Type and moved to Mazda-derived four-cylinder engines, branded Duratec by Ford, in place of the outgoing Zetec range.[1] Sales peaked above 100,000 units a year in the UK during the 1990s and still topped 80,000 in 2001, a scale later generations never matched.
Three trims are recorded here: the 2.0-litre petrol, the 2.0 TDCi diesel, and the ST220, a newly developed 3.0-litre V6 replacing the previous generation’s ST200, sold as a saloon, liftback and estate. As with the first generation, the ST220’s published 0-62 mph time is not converted to a 0-100 km/h figure, since the two describe different speed thresholds; only its top speed, a straightforward unit conversion, is recorded.
