The A3 marked Audi’s return to small cars in 1996, nineteen years after the Audi 50 was discontinued, and has run through four generations since on Volkswagen Group platforms shared with the Golf.[1] It has always paired volume front-drive models with a performance-flagship S3, and since 2001 an even faster RS 3.

This entry covers the launch 8L generation and the current 8Y generation; the two generations in between, 8P (2003) and 8V (2012), are not authored here.
