AvtoVAZ was founded in Tolyatti, Soviet Union, in 1966, purpose-built with Fiat’s help to mass-produce a Western-designed small car for a domestic market that had almost nothing like one.[1] Cars sold at home carried the Zhiguli name; the same cars, and Lada as a brand for them, were built for export from the early 1970s. Lada went on to sell more cars in more countries than any other Soviet or Russian manufacturer, on the back of low price and mechanical simplicity rather than sophistication.
