Detail

The United States’ first federal armoury, established at Springfield in 1777 to make cartridges and gun carriages and closed in 1968. For most of that span it was where American service rifles were designed as well as built — the Model 1903, the M1 Garand and the M14 all came out of it. The name is now also used by an unrelated private company founded in 1974; arms on this site attributed to the armoury are the federal one’s, and the two should not be conflated.
