Howa Machinery, Ltd.

Founded in 1907 near Nagoya, Howa built machine tools and, from the 1960s, licensed AR-pattern rifles for the Japan Self-Defense Forces before designing its own Type 89 assault rifle. The firm remains a diversified manufacturer of machinery and construction equipment alongside its firearms business, which is Japan’s sole domestic source of military rifles.
