Detail
Ludwig Loewe’s machine-tool company absorbed a cartridge maker in 1896 and took the name DWM, and for the next thirty years it was Germany’s principal private arms manufacturer. Georg Luger worked there; so did the toggle-locked pistol he adapted from Hugo Borchardt’s design, and the 9×19mm cartridge developed for it. The Versailles restrictions forced the company into other trades, it made pistols again under other names, and it was finally absorbed into Diehl in 1970.
