The Kovrov machine-gun works was founded in 1916 as a Russo-Danish venture to build Madsen guns for the imperial army, and it has made automatic weapons without interruption since. Vasily Degtyaryov joined in 1918 and eventually gave the plant his name; the DP-27, the DShK, the RPD and every series-produced PK-pattern machine gun came out of Kovrov. It is still the manufacturer of the PKM and of the Pecheneg that was developed from it.
