Introduced 2019

Also known as 6.8x51mm: the same cartridge under different names, all of which find this page.

SAAMI

SAAMI and C.I.P. measure pressure differently and their figures are not interchangeable, which is why the body is always named beside the figure.

Velocity is recorded per barrel length as published. A gun page interpolates between these points and never projects beyond them.

Detail

SIG Sauer developed this cartridge, marketed under the metric name 6.8×51mm for its military submission, for the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon programme. The programme was launched over concern that improving body armour was eroding how reliably 5.56×45mm NATO rounds could defeat it, and the Army selected SIG Sauer in 2022 to build the M7 rifle and M250 automatic rifle around this round for operational testing beginning in 2024.

What makes the cartridge unusual is its case rather than its bullet diameter. Each case is a hybrid of a stainless-steel base bonded to a brass body through an aluminium locking washer, a construction chosen to survive an operating pressure well above what a conventional all-brass case is built for. That pressure (about 80,000 psi by SAAMI’s method, converted here to 551.6 MPa) is far higher than a typical rifle cartridge, and Wikipedia’s own account notes this headroom brings an increased risk of case or firearm rupture that the hybrid case and matching chamber are engineered against.

None of this entry’s dimensions carry an inline citation on the Wikipedia article that is its only source here, so every figure is recorded as estimated rather than verified, and no primary SIG Sauer or SAAMI datasheet has been consulted directly. No free dimensional standard exists for a cartridge this new, and no photograph illustrates this entry.
