The original Camry, launched in Japan in March 1982 as a four-door notchback sedan sold alongside a badge-engineered twin, the Toyota Vista.[1] It was Toyota’s first transverse front-wheel-drive car, and its wheelbase was deliberately set 150 mm longer than the Honda Accord’s. This was a direct shot at the car it was built to beat in North America.
Power and torque are thin for this generation: the only figure Wikipedia’s own article gives is 92 hp for the US-market 2.0-litre engine, quoted in a comparison against the Accord’s 86 hp rather than from a manufacturer spec sheet, and no torque figure exists anywhere in the source for this generation at all.
