The car that created the European MPV: a tall one-box body designed to seat seven on a car-like platform, rather than a van converted to carry people.[1] Renault took nine sales in its first month in 1984 before the concept caught on. This entry covers the original, Matra-built J11 and the fourth-generation J81, the last Espace still sold as a conventional MPV before the range moved steadily upmarket and, from its sixth generation in 2023, was rebadged onto a mid-size crossover SUV body. This entry does not cover that car, since it is no longer the body style the Espace name made famous.
