The original Cayenne, on sale from August 2002, met a mixed critical reception but proved itself with genuinely strong on-road performance and capable off-road hardware for the class.[1] The range launched with only V8-powered S and Turbo models; a VR6 and a diesel followed later in the run, and the Turbo S, built to compete with the Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG, arrived in 2006.

Three trims are recorded here: the entry VR6, the naturally aspirated V8 Cayenne S, and the twin-turbocharged V8 Cayenne Turbo. Peak power for the Cayenne S is quoted two ways in the source: 340 PS in a specification table, and a separately cited 335 hp figure attached to a 6.9-second 0-60 mph time. The two power figures agree to within rounding, but the 0-60 mph time is a different quantity from the 0-100 km/h this catalogue stores, so it is not converted or recorded here.
