BMW’s first purpose-built electric car, sold from 2013 to 2022 as the debut model of the standalone “i” sub-brand.[1] Rather than converting an existing 3 Series or 1 Series, BMW built the i3 around a dedicated aluminium chassis carrying a carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic passenger cell (a construction method never before used at this production volume) with rear-hinged “coach doors” and no B-pillar.
Only one generation was built, badged internally I01, so this catalogue’s hub-and-generation structure holds a single entry here: one nameplate, sold throughout its life as a pure battery-electric car and, optionally, with a small petrol range-extender engine that charged the battery but never drove the wheels directly.
