Kava
Ground kava root kneaded in water and strained through cloth into a murky, earthy drink, the way it is prepared for a kava circle.
Serving
Drink spec, per drink
Every figure above is per drink and does not move with the count, which is what makes the two service modes comparable. Sugar per litre, strength and standard drinks stay in the units their own authorities publish, because they are figures for comparing rather than for pouring.
Diet and allergen labels are computed from the ingredients listed on this page and nothing else. They cannot account for cross-contamination or for the particular product you buy, and they are not medical or safety guidance.
Glass
Vessel
250 ml of liquid, served without ice, inside the 300 ml the glass holds. The build fails if a recipe ever exceeds its stated vessel.
A batch needs a vessel that closes and fits a fridge shelf.
Method
2 steps · 10mKnead the 120 g kava root by hand inside a cloth bag submerged in the 1 000 ml water, working it for 8m until the water has turned cloudy and muddy brown.
Kneading the ground root directly in the water, by hand inside a cloth bag, is what pulls the extract out; simply stirring it leaves most of what a kava circle is drinking behind in the fibre.
Wring the bag out hard to get the last of the extract through, then ladle into shells or cups, stirring or swirling each one just before it is handed over.
Common pitfallKava settles fast once strained, so each shell or cup is stirred or swirled again just before it is served, rather than ladled from a bowl that has been sitting.
Keeping and make-ahead
Batched ahead, this keeps sealed and cold. The water line the engine adds is the dilution figure from the spec panel, not a rule of thumb.
About
A root drink domesticated in northern Vanuatu around three thousand years ago and still prepared and shared much as it always has been, whose physiological effects are genuinely documented and genuinely contested.
Kava descends from a wild pepper relative, Piper wichmannii, and was domesticated into the sterile, cultivated plant known today in northern Vanuatu roughly three thousand years ago; because the cultivated plant cannot reproduce on its own, every kava plant since has depended on people propagating it by hand 1. From Vanuatu it spread with Lapita and later Austronesian voyagers east across much of the Pacific, though it never reached New Zealand, where the climate will not support it 1. Preparing it from dried root, as this page does, is itself a documented historical adaptation rather than the original method: fresh root pounded or chewed was standard until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when missionary opposition to kava drinking in parts of the Pacific pushed the practice toward dried root that could be prepared more discreetly 1.
In Vanuatu the drink has long carried real social weight rather than functioning as an everyday refreshment: traditionally reserved largely for chiefs and significant occasions, it remains central to weddings, funerals and the welcoming of guests, and communal kava bars called nakamals serve as a setting for village discussion and dispute resolution 2.
Kava's effects and their risks are both real subjects of ongoing research rather than settled facts in either direction. A group of compounds called kavalactones is responsible for most of the plant's activity, producing a reported calm and sociability without an accompanying loss of mental clarity, alongside a characteristic numbing of the mouth 1. Kava was restricted or banned in several countries in the early 2000s after reports connected it to liver injury, and the World Health Organization has since distinguished between traditional, water-based preparation, which it judged an acceptably low health risk, and concentrated solvent-based extracts, which it linked to a higher risk of harm; some of those national restrictions have since been reconsidered, while a 2017 European assessment still found the balance of benefit and risk for medicinal use unfavourable 1. The dispute is substantially about preparation method and extraction rather than about kava root itself.
